General questions

These 2 abbreviations (QFE and QNH) are extracts from the famous “Q” code. This code was instituted by the London Conference in 1912. It’s made up of a list of 3-letter codes, valid for all the countries in the world. Intended mainly for telegraphic and radiotelegraphic transmissions (in Morse code), it is a list of abbreviations, summarizing in three unambiguous letters sentences, questions or answers that are long to formulate in plain language, thus eliminating the risk of errors in transmission, reception, language and interpretation. The “Q” code is still widely used today by ships and amateur radio operators. It is still officially used in radiotelephony. The aeronautical world doesn’t use all of them, but some are in everyday use.

Measuring wind is no easy task in a natural environment, as many factors have to be taken into account, and the flow of air can be greatly altered if several anemometers are set up side by side. The inclination of the device in the airflow can also generate an error in the wind measurement. Our anemometers cannot be calibrated independently and are checked in our workshops before being released for sale.

Note: If the data displayed by your instrument seems very different from reality, check that you are comparing all instruments with the same unit. It can happen that you change it without realizing it.

  • Atmospheric pressure at ground level, also known as absolute pressure.
  • QNH Atmospheric pressure calculated at sea level under standard atmospheric conditions, also known as relative pressure. This is the pressure announced in weather reports or on television.

The perceived temperature is calculated by taking into account ambient temperature and wind speed. In windy conditions, it gives an indication of the body’s heat loss if the temperature is below 10°C. Formula adopted in January 2003 by the U.S. Federal Office of Meteorological Coordination in conjunction with the Canadian Meteorological Service (MSC), the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

For example: an ambient temperature of 0°C and a wind speed of 30 km/h have the same effect on your body as a temperature of -7.8°C!

Skywatch® Eole

Skywatch Eole is an anemometer with a large 54 mm propeller that accurately measures wind strength regardless of direction. The Skywatch Eole is powered by two replaceable LR6 batteries. Display in tenths of a unit up to 99.9, then in units. The aluminum base gives the camera great strength, and the 1/4″ thread on the underside allows it to be attached to a photo tripod.

A larger and more robust anemometer, the Eole is equipped with a multi-directional propeller allowing a precise measurement without having to be perfectly oriented in the wind axis. It is the ideal companion for kite surfers or navigators.

Attach it to a tripod; you can constantly check the current state of the surrounding weather conditions.

The Eole is unsinkable, so it can fall into the water without disappearing into the abyss, and its backlighting means it can be used even when daylight is fading.

Measuring perceived temperature: As you know, low temperatures are dangerous for the human body. But did you know that wind strongly influences the actual temperatures felt by your body? Carrying the Skywatch Meteos with you wherever you go, you’ll know instantly what your body temperature feels like, so you can avoid the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

Calculation: Feeling temperature is calculated by taking into account ambient temperature and wind speed. In windy conditions, it gives an indication of heat loss if the temperature is below 37°C, and of heat gain if the temperature is above 37°C.
For example, an ambient temperature of 0°C and a wind speed of 30 km/h have the same effect on your body as a temperature of -13°C.
